Virgil van Dijk reveals why he signed for Liverpool over their rivals
Virgil van Dijk has spoken out about his £75million move to Liverpool, and has revealed why he was happy to snub both Manchester City and Chelsea.
The Reds parted with £75million to land the Holland international from Southampton before the window had even opened.
Jurgen Klopp's side had attempted to sign the centre-back in the summer, and finally managed to get the deal over the line in January.
Both Manchester City and Chelsea were also keen on landing the talented defender, who later admitted it was his "dream" to sign for Liverpool.
Speaking to Sky Sports about why he picked the Reds over the other two Premier League giants, Van Dijk said: "I think the size of the club, the fans, the players, the manager, the whole package here is amazing.
"You can see yourself that the atmosphere at every home game is amazing. I'm just very happy to play for the club."
Blues boss Antonio Conte also spoke out about Van Dijk this week, revealing his side of the transfer story regarding Chelsea.
"This is football. This is life," Conte said. "For sure he was our target but as you know this is football.
"We can have a lot of targets but you must be able to reach those targets.
"The transfer market is not simple for any club. Liverpool bought Van Dijk to reinforce his defensive line, and I think Van Dijk is a top defender. And they spent €85million [£75million] for this player.
"At the same time, they sold very well [Philippe Coutinho] because when you sell a player for this amount of money, and then you have the rest of money to invest and to improve your team.
"But I think the transfer market is not simple, especially if there is this amount of money."
