News Updates

Liverpool have agreed a world record fee with Roma for goalkeeper Alisson.

After months of speculation, Liverpool finally made their move and have agreed a world record fee of around £67 million with AS Roma for goalkeeper Alisson Becker.  according to BBC Sport, who claim the fee will be around £66.8 million.

The Roma goalkeeper is hot property this summer, with Chelsea also keen on landing him, yet it seems both Roma and the player himself are happy with him going to Liverpool – and a move is on the cards.

The deal, of course, would be a world record fee for a goalkeeper, eclipsing the €53m paid by Juventus for Gianluigi Buffon way back in 2001 and the £35m paid by Manchester City for Alisson's compatriot Ederson last summer. Alisson kept Ederson out of the Brazil line-up at the World Cup, having cemented his spot as his country's number one keeper.

Alisson, 25, has been a long-term target at Liverpool, whose goalkeeping situation has remained unclear after Loris Karius' errors in the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in May. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp initially backed Karius but sources told ESPN FC that Danny Ward had a realistic chance of securing the Liverpool No. 1 jersey.

Alisson joined Roma from Brazilian side Internacional for €8m in 2016 and has made 64 appearances for the Italian side.

He has been on holiday after playing in all five of Brazil's fixtures at the World Cup in Russia this summer before they were knocked out by Belgium in the quarterfinals.

Having initially defended Loris Karius at the start of pre-season, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp seems too have made a u-turn, and is now chasing the Roma star – with Liverpool willing to break the bank for the highly rated 25-year-old.

The 25-year-old is in line to become the most expensive goalkeeper of all time and it is understood that Jurgen Klopp’s side now have permission to talk to the player after a fee was agreed between the two clubs.

However, given Alisson himself wants a move to join Mo Salah at Liverpool and the Reds are in the Champions League next term – something that Chelsea are of course not, it seems that Jurgen Klopp’s men are the more attractive proposition of the two.

Liverpool are desperate for a keeper, and after a terrible start to pre-season from Loris Karius and doubts over the future of Simon Migonlet and Danny Ward’s ability at the very top, it’s not a shock to see the club taking it upon themselves to finally answer the calls from fans to get a truly world class goalkeeper.

Alisson enjoyed a brilliant season with Italian giants Roma last season, keeping an incredible 22 clean sheets in 49 appearances across all competitions.
