Roberto Firmino is 'one of the most underrated players in the Premier League', claims club legend Jamie Carragher
Jamie Carragher has described Roberto Firmino as 'one of the most underrated players in the Premier League' after the Brazilian forward delivered a stunning performance in Liverpool's 4-3 win over Manchester City on Sunday.
Firmino scored his side's second as Jurgen Klopp's Reds ended City's unbeaten Premier League record this season in emphatic style at Anfield.
The Brazilian reinstated Liverpool's lead in the 59th minute as he shrugged off John Stones before delicately chipping over the onrushing Ederson.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah were also on target but Carragher was impressed with Firmino and claimed the No 9 rarely receives the plaudits he deserves.
‘We are talking about one of the most underrated players in the Premier League in Firmino,' said Carragher.
'Very highly rated here by the manager, but outside of Liverpool you don’t mention him as one of the top strikers, because you don’t see him as an out-and-out scorer like Kane or Lukaku.
'I would say he is the first name on the team sheet – yes you have Salah and Mane, but for Klopp, his hold up play, his work off the ball, and now getting goals, he is one of the top attacking players in the Premier League, but is still not talked about with others.’
Salah once again impressed and notched Liverpool's fourth goal when he controlled a loose Ederson clearance and fired home from distance into the empty net.
When discussing the Egyptian, Carragher struggled to think of another Liverpool signing who has had the same impact in such a short period of time.
‘I think that the start Salah has made, I can’t think of a Liverpool signing who has ever made a better start,' he added. 'John Barnes in late 80s was fantastic, but can’t think of too many others who have made that impact'.
