Anfield Update

WHY DOMINIC SOLANKE IS READY TO COMPETE FOR A STARTING SPOT UNDER KLOPP

Solanke is strong and ready......
Dominic Solanke is one of Liverpool’s new boys of the summer and he hit the ground running in pre-season with three goals and played his hand in two goals.

The 19-year-old striker moved from Chelsea in July and has shown already that he belongs in the first team with his power and physique that makes him effective both charging through on goal and aerially.

Last Saturday, Jürgen Klopp’s second half substitutions were spot on as if it was not for Solanke’s efforts to keep the ball alive in the box, Sadio Mané wouldn’t have scored the winning goal. Klopp’s decision to put his faith in Dominic Solanke over Divock Origi for the second time in two games hinted as a rise in the pecking order for the young Englishman.

He may be young but Solanke has the potential to flourish at Liverpool, having already shown what difference he can make to a game where Liverpool are looking for a goal. He has met and exceeded expectations and it would come as no surprise to see him as a fixture in the senior side.

The Under-20s World Cup winner has not wasted his opportunities to show why Liverpool felt signing him was shrewd business, and conversely, why Chelsea were so maddened by his decision to depart Stamford Bridge for Anfield after turning down an offer of a new contract.

Klopp believes Solanke is ready for senior football, which is exactly the affirmation he was after but never received from Antonio Conte. While he was an Under-15 player, Solanke was handed a debut for Chelsea’s Under-18s side and he was not intimidated by defenders who were three years his senior and ended the season with two goals in ten appearances.

He has the character of a first-team player and his maturity shows. His focus on the game and playing well under pressure will be useful for Jürgen Klopp this season as the Reds progress to the group stages of the Champions League and will be in four competitions which means that squad rotation is key.

With Daniel Sturridge having regained fitness over the summer, when Klopp decides to opt for a striker he will have the choice between three, including Divock Origi, but it seems that Solanke is creeping up the pecking order and will be seen a lot more than Origi.

Solanke has been called up for the England Under-21s World Cup Qualification squad and after his success at the U20s World Cup, it is likely that he will play a part in leading the Young Lions to further success.

It’s early days yet, but Dominic Solanke has a promising future at Liverpool and is certainly a stellar signing of the summer for a bargain price. Some solid work from Liverpool’s transfer committee and they deserve some credit for his success at Liverpool, which is rarely said given the way the transfer windows pan out.
