James Milner Backed his team-mates to score more goals than Mohamed Salah

James Milner has pleaded with his Liverpool team-mates to relieve some of the pressure off Mohamed Salah and score more goals themselves.

Salah joined Jurgen Klopp’s side in the summer from Roma and he’s exceeded all expectations in his debut season for the Reds so far, having bagged 32 goals and nine assists in all competitions.

The Egypt international has 24 of those goals in the Premier League, and is currently sharing the league’s top spot with Tottenham striker Harry Kane. However, Milner wants the rest of team to take more control of the attacking responsibility for the remainder of the season.

‘In games you need those moments of brilliance at times to unlock defences and he [Salah] can do that,’ Milner said. ‘He can create goals out of nothing, on his own. ‘It’s important as a team that we take some pressure off him as well and make sure the goals are shared out throughout the team.

‘Most importantly, [we need] to create those chances for him. He can do it on his own at times, but it’s important that we keep creating those opportunities, so that he keeps doing the work for us as part of that team as well.’

Liverpool’s second highest scorer this season is Roberto Firmino. The Brazil international has claimed 22 goals in all competitions alongside 12 assists. Klopp’s side next face Porto in the Premier League on March 6 in a tie which they are already comfortably ahead on aggregate with a 5-0 lead.
