Michael Owen sends blunt message to Virgil van Dijk ahead of Liverpool FC debut
Michael Owen warned Virgil van Dijk that the pressure is on for the Liverpool FC record signing to prove a hit at Anfield.
The Netherlands international completed a move to the Anfield last week in a world-record move for a defender to finally end the long running transfer saga.
Liverpool FC spent £75m on Van Dijk in a bid to resolve their defensive problems after conceding 25 times in 22 games in the Premier League this season.
Van Dijk spent two seasons at Celtic before he moved to Southampton in 2015, where the Netherlands international established himself as a top defender in the Premier League.
The 26-year-old has experience in the Champions League but hasn’t played at a top European club before aside from Celtic, whose powers have waned over the last couple of decades.
Former Liverpool FC striker Owen warned Van Dijk that he is under a lot of pressure to perform in Klopp’s team to improve their defensive record in the current campaign.
Owen wrote on Twitter: “Can’t miss this tonight. Looking forward to watching Van Dijk make his debut. The pressure is on but that’s life as a Liverpool player.”
Liverpool FC finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last term to secure a return to the Champions League.
The Reds are looking to secure a top four spot in consecutive seasons.
