Salah crowned African Footballer of the Year
Mohamed Salah has been crowned the BBC’s African Footballer of the Year for 2017.Salah beat off competition from Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane for the award as well as RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita, who will move to Anfield next summer.
Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Chelsea winger Victor Moses were among the other candidates in the broadcaster’s five-man shortlist.
The Egypt international led his country to their first World Cup finals since 1990 with a stoppage-time penalty against Congo in October’s decisive qualifier.
Salah has also excelled since joining the Reds in June, scoring 19 times in his first 24 appearances including the opener in Sunday’s Merseyside derby.
“I would like to win this award also next year,” he told BBC Sport.
“I have always followed my way, and I want everyone in Egypt to follow my way.
“Since I left Egypt, in my mind, I want to be the best Egyptian ever. I work hard and try to be different from them.”
El-Hadji Diouf was the last Liverpool player to win the African Football of the Year award back in 2002.
