Liverpool Jurgen Klopp needs to sign two Defenders if Virgil van Dijk fails to join by January - Phil Thompson

Phil Thompson has warned Jurgen Klopp that Liverpool need to sign two centre-halves in January if Virgil van Dijk doesn’t move to Anfield.
The Merseyside outfit pursued the Netherlands international throughout the summer transfer window but Liverpool were unable to get a deal over the line.
The Reds were forced to issue a statement apologising to Southampton over their pursuit of the 26-year-old after the Saints threatened to report Liverpool for an alleged tapping up.
Although the 18-time English champions officially ended their interest in Van Dijk, the former Celtic defender continued to be linked with a move to Anfield after he handed in a transfer request.
Liverpool failed to secure a deal for Van Dijk but the Merseyside club continued to be linked with a switch for the Dutch centre-half ahead of the January transfer window.
The Reds’ defensive problems have persisted in the 2017-18 season after conceding 15 goals in five games on the road in the Premier League ahead of this weekend’s trip to West Ham United.
Former Liverpool defender Thompson believes Klopp needs to sign two centre-halves in the January transfer window.
“Jurgen Klopp still has my total faith but he still has work to do to get players in,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“Only Joel Matip and Andrew Robertson, who he hasn’t really used, are his players in defence, so he hasn’t addressed that issue and he needs to find out very soon whether the Virgil van Dijk deal is going to happen.
“I believe he can’t wait until the summer, so two new centre-backs are required in January if Van Dijk isn’t coming.”
Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table to secure a return to the Champions League.
