Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp insists only losing matches can kill him

The Liverpool manager’s comment was delivered with a smile as he played down fears over his health in his own cheeky manner with a rather different motivational team talk.

If anyone was concerned for Klopp, this was the way he put those at ease after his hospital visit earlier in the week.

The German was admitted to a local NHS hospital after complaining to club doctor Andrew Massey that he was feeling unwell but later released after tests proved there were no serious problems.

The worry was that most people do not go to the hospital if they are just feeling under the weather, but Klopp insisted there is nothing to be concerned about unless his team’s form plummets of course.

“I am really completely fine,” said Klopp, 50. “It is not that someone should think I have to go back in to hospital tomorrow.

“I told the players that the doctor said the only thing that can kill me is if we lose football games. That’s it. No, I am completely fine. It was nothing.”

He welcomes a Southampton team whose manager Mauricio Pellegrino believes playing the Premier League powerhouses will bring the best out of his side and wants to prove it when he returns to Anfield.

Pellegrino said: “It will be really difficult because at Anfield people are pushing all the time and they will be trying to press higher.

“It will be an opportunity to show we can play this type of game. Maybe against this team we will be a surprise.”

Pellegrino made 12 appearances for Liverpool during their 2005 Champions League-winning season and also started his coaching career at Anfield.
