Liverpool's Simon Mignolet has a penalty saving record That's Quite Spectacular

 15 AUG 2017

The Belgian goalkeeper might not be everybody's cup of tea, but when it comes to facing spot kicks he's proved invaluable to his club since joining from Sunderland,

You've probably got an opinion on Simon Mignolet, and it probably isn't an overly positive one.

Granted, the Belgian was in good form towards the end of last season as he helped Liverpool into a place in the Premier League's top four, but to say he hasn't been overly convincing during his time at Anfield would be an understatement.

Except, that is, when it comes to facing penalty kicks.

And he was at that again on Tuesday night against Hoffenheim .

Just 12 minutes were on the clock in the Reds' Champions League playoff first leg when Mignolet faced a spot kick from the former Leicester forward Andrej Kramaric, and although he was helped by the Croatian's shocking effort, he pulled off yet another save.

And it extended his pretty impressive record when facing penalties from open play for the Reds.

Simon Mignolet's penalty record for Liverpool

He's now faced 20 and saved seven, making that a huge 35% save ratio.

That compares favorably to the likes of David De Gea - who has only saved five of 24 he's faced for Manchester United - Thibaut Courtois - who has only saved one of seven for Chelsea - and Petr Cech, who still hasn't saved one for Arsenal in 11 attempts.

So while you could criticize Mignolet for many things, penalty saving isn't one of them.
