Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool: Reds transfer tactics backed by Gabriele Marcotti.
LIVERPOOL are right to be patient
in their pursuit of Southampton
defender Virgil van Dijk.
That’s the opinion of Gabriele Marcotti who thinks the Reds are in a good position to sign the centre-back because there is little competition for his signature.
Van Dijk is currently training on his own away from the rest of the Southampton squad after requesting to leave the club.
Earlier this summer Saints accused Liverpool of tapping up the 25-year-old.
Marcotti told ESPN FC: “On strike has legal implications for him so I don’t think that’s what he would call it.
“I think what managers like to do is say ‘well his head’s not right so we’re not going to have him as part of the group’ because he might be disruptive or whatever else.
“This is obviously a power play between the club and the player. Southampton have shown this before. You remember they’ve done it with [Sadio] Mane and other players in the past.
“They’re not afraid to go and hard ball and show some muscle. Normally with most clubs this ends up getting resolved when someone puts forth a fee that Southampton would be happy with but I don’t know that that is going to happen here if they’re really going to hold out for the big clubs.
“Remember Manchester City had been linked but they seem to have spent their money elsewhere. Chelsea had been linked but they signed Antonio Rudiger.
“They’re aren’t too many obvious suitors for Virgil van Dijk right now so I think Liverpool are doing the right thing in waiting this out and trying to get him at a price they are comfortable with.”
Liverpool are desperate to sign a central defender as they get set for a return to the Champions League.
The Reds have so far signed Dominic Solanke and Mohamed Salah and Robertson as Jurgen Klopp overhauls his side.
